Lagos, Wednesday, 29th June, 2020: As part of its commitment to improving the learning environment & culture, providing access to world-class technology, and accessing content partnerships with universities across the globe; Platform Capital and Unicorn Group have donated state-of-the-art autonomous robots to the University of Lagos (UNILAG). These robots are the first of their type to be deployed in universities on the continent.
The robots are cloud-based intelligent service robots that can solve issues in education, learning, medical consultation, security, banking, transportation, customer service and other fields through the latest technologies including Facial & Voice Recognition, Navigation & Obstacle Avoidance, Target tracking, and Video Calling functionality. The robots are being donated to the UNILAG library to improve the learning environment for students, by cataloguing the books and journals making them easier to locate, providing easy access to a virtual library from global libraries, scanning students to assess their health before entry, and tracking the number of individuals in the library.
The Medical School is also receiving robots to reduce the risk of medical practitioners contracting Covid-19 by reducing contact between infected patients and medical staff through the utilisation of the robot’s camera, speaker, and microphone to record patient vitals. They will also enable telemedicine consultation with international doctors / specialist consultants and aid the development of medical software applications that leverage the robots’ systems.
In addition, the robots are also being donated to the University of Lagos Business School to further enhance the student experience by providing a seamless check-in process, access to a virtual content library, and also open up the minds of the 30 African entrepreneurs that will be incubated at the University of Lagos Business school. Platform will initially donate 5 robots to UNILAG but will increase the number as opportunities to further improve the learning environment, student experience, safety, and security arise.
Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos said, “The introduction of artificial intelligence via these autonomous robots will improve our delivery lines. With the global pandemic on the rise, the robots will help reduce contact between possible COVID carriers and our security/protocol personnel.”
Dr. Akindele, Chairman, Platform Capital remarked, “We are toeing the line that the VC has drawn for the University of Lagos. The VC is a visionary who has great plans for the University of Lagos that will position not just the school, but the entire Nigerian educational system, on the global map. We have plugged into his vision to support him and make sure that the learning experience at the university is world-class. These robots are evidence of our commitment to education, learning, and to being socially responsible investors. Our environment and ecosystem is very important to us; we believe that the more we invest in our ecosystem and environment, the greater the impact we will have over the long-term that will cascade into different segments of the society.”
